MANCHESTER COUNTRY RETREAT
Clive Christian Nantwich was commissioned to design a bespoke kitchen for a renovated 1990s oak-framed country home in Manchester. The client wished to create a space that seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary styling, suited to both everyday family life and elegant entertaining.
The L-shaped kitchen was designed with flow in mind, creating defined zones for cooking, socialising, and quiet conversation. Central to the space is a striking black walnut island paired with matching tall cabinetry, contrasted by cool white furniture and stone worktops to enhance light and volume.
The client wanted to balance modern comfort and style with traditional features and craftsmanship. Clive Christian cabinetry was specially commissioned, with bespoke doors crafted from the Architectural Collection. The result is a completely unique kitchen that balances contemporary styling with subtle classical details.
The kitchen features a large black walnut island and a complementary tall appliance housing, also in black walnut. Contrasting stone worktops and cool-white cabinetry elsewhere in the kitchen emphasise the sense of space in the room.
The client wanted an alternative to a traditional mantle, so the hob is located on the island next to the oven and the extractor is concealed in a dropped-down ceiling feature. This supports the flow and openness of the space and allows the host to chat to guests while preparing food.
There is a full bespoke pantry larder with lighting, door racks and drawers for dry goods, as well as a large drinks cabinet dresser with a small prep sink and hot tap, antique mirrored back and large glass shelving. The Clive Christian team also designed and crafted freestanding items including a marquetry coffee table and a bespoke dining table, and assisted with the choice of colour palette and soft furnishings.
